USED CAR CHECKLIST
Take a few pointers into checking a used car:
The first part of the used car that you must examine is the engine. Look for any signs of neglect or poor maintenance. A cold start of the motor can bring to light any possible starting problems. A test drive will give you further insight into the car and its condition. Check for knocking sounds or smoke billowing out of the engine.
Look for excessive wear and tear of the interiors. This may indicate heavy usage. Do not get taken in merely by new floor mats and interior carpets.
If the brake pedal has worn all the way to the metal underneath, it is another indication of excessive mileage.
Is the gear transmission smooth?
What is the condition of the brakes and clutch?
Is the used car properly aligned?
What is the quality of the suspension?
In many a used car, the odometer is tampered to indicate lesser mileage than what is actually run.
A thorough examination of the car exterior, body panels is essential to check for any major problems.
Look out for signs of rusting, around lights and bumpers, bottom of fender and under the doors.
Do not get taken in merely by low odometer readings. It must be supported by relative usage of brake, accelerator and clutch pedal.
Do not neglect to check the history of the used car. Vehicles that have been involved in a serious accident, flood or heavy abuse are not a worthwhile proposition. You can take along a mechanic for the inspection.
